If you’re picked up at the airport, look for your driver at the arrivals area holding a Kondor Path Tours sign with your name on it. The vehicle accommodates your luggage. Common scenarios:

• Morning arrival + same-day Full Day tour: land at 08:00 AM, meet driver at 08:30 AM, start tour with luggage in vehicle, drop luggage at hotel before the afternoon Coricancha + Cathedral portion
• Same-day departure (late evening): bring luggage to tour, we hold in vehicle, drop you at airport after tour
• Cruise day excursion from Lima: pickup at airport at 08:00 AM, complete the Full Day tour, drop back at airport by 17:30 PM

Stop 1 — Tambomachay (~30 minutes, highest altitude 3,765 m)

We start at the highest site first because the morning is when your body has the most energy for altitude exposure. Tambomachay sits at 3,765 m / 12,352 ft — only 415 m above central Cusco but enough that the air is noticeably thinner.

What you’ll experience here:

The site is the sacred Inca water shrine where Inca royalty performed ritual purification before major ceremonies. The most striking feature is that the three Inca-built fountains have been continuously flowing for over 600 years — fed by underground springs that the Incas engineered to maintain consistent pressure regardless of seasonal variation.

In your 30 minutes you’ll see:

• The three cascading water fountains built from precisely-fitted Inca stones with no mortar
• The Inca aqueduct system channeling spring water down through the structure
• The ceremonial pools below the main fountains where Inca royalty performed ritual bathing
• The fine cellular stonework — some of the most precisely fitted stones at any of the 4 sites, showing Inca mastery of small-scale architecture
• The natural spring source above the main fountains

The site has a peaceful, contemplative atmosphere — many travelers describe it as their favorite stop of the day. The flowing water creates a natural sound that masks tourist chatter.

Your guide explains (8-10 minute narration appropriate for the extended pacing): the role of water in Inca cosmology as the most feminine and fertile sacred element; the connection between Mama Cocha (Mother of Waters) and the ceremonies performed here; how the Inca hydraulic engineering principles you see at this small site scale up to the monumental work you’ll see at Sacsayhuaman later.

Stop 2 — Puca Pucara (~20 minutes, 3,650 m)

A short scenic drive (5 minutes) downhill brings you to Puca Pucara. The Inca administrative checkpoint that controlled all traffic between the Sacred Valley and Cusco.

What you’ll experience here:

The “Red Fortress” — named for the iron-oxide color of its local stone — was the imperial checkpoint where Inca officials monitored incoming travelers, traveling royalty, and tribute caravans heading into Cusco.

In your 20 minutes you’ll see:

• The outer defensive walls with their distinctive reddish hue (most photogenic in afternoon light)
• The central watchtower platform with 360° panoramic views toward the Sacred Valley to the north
• The multiple chambers and storage rooms — Inca administrative checkpoints included food storage for traveling officials, lodging for royal messengers (chasquis), and customs offices
• The water channels that supplied the checkpoint with drinking water
• The strategic positioning that controlled the road from Cusco to the Sacred Valley

Why we spend 20 minutes here (vs the 10-15 of rushed tours): the extended time lets your guide explain the Inca administrative state — not just a watchtower, but a functioning customs office, lodging facility, and tribute collection point that demonstrates the bureaucratic sophistication of Tahuantinsuyu. This administrative context matters for what you’ll see this afternoon at Coricancha and the Cathedral, both of which the Spanish later built on top of imperial Inca administrative centers.

Stop 3 — Q’enqo (~30 minutes, 3,580 m)

A short drive (5 minutes) brings you to Q’enqo, a ceremonial site with a distinctly different character from Sacsayhuaman.

What you’ll experience here:

Q’enqo is essentially one large carved natural rock formation — the Incas didn’t construct walls here; instead they shaped and carved a natural outcrop into a sacred ceremonial space.

In your 30 minutes you’ll cover two distinct sections:

Above-ground (15 minutes guided):

• The semicircular ceremonial space at ground level with carved benches and the central altar stone
• The carved monolith at the entrance with zigzag patterns (which gave the site its Quechua name — “Q’enqo” means “zigzag”)
• The 19 trapezoidal niches along the upper walls (likely held mummified ancestors or sacred objects during ceremonies)
• The carved astronomical channel running across the surface, used for ritual offerings of chicha (corn beer) or sacrificial liquids

Underground passage (10-15 minutes including exploration):

This is the experiential highlight of Q’enqo and one that the rushed Half Day version often skips. Descend into the natural cave that the Incas converted into a ceremonial space. Your guide leads with a small flashlight (we provide if you don’t have one).

Inside the cave:

• Carved sacrificial altars at the cave’s lowest point — used for offerings to Pachamama (Mother Earth)
• The acoustic properties of the chamber — the cave was designed for specific ritual vocalizations
• The natural rock formations the Incas left in place, integrating sacred geography with constructed architecture

Why this matters for the afternoon Cusco visit: the pattern you see here — Inca sacred space with carved altars dedicated to Pachamama — is the same pattern you’ll encounter this afternoon at Coricancha, but at monumental scale. Q’enqo is the small-scale preview of the Inca religion you’ll see Spanish architecture built on top of later.

Stop 4 — Sacsayhuaman (~60 minutes, 3,500 m) ⭐ Extended visit

A short drive (5 minutes) brings you to Sacsayhuaman. This is where the extended Full Day pacing genuinely matters — Sacsayhuaman is the most visually monumental site of the tour and rewards unhurried exploration.

What you’ll experience here:

You arrive at the main esplanade — a wide flat ceremonial space at the base of the famous cyclopean walls. Sacsayhuaman is both the engineering masterpiece of the Inca empire and the site of the most decisive battle of the Spanish conquest.

During your 60 minutes you’ll cover three architectural sections:

Section 1 — The three zigzag walls (15-20 minutes): Walk along the three concentric zigzag wall sections, each built from massive stones cut and fitted without mortar. Your guide identifies the largest individual stone in the lower wall (weighing approximately 150 tons) and explains how Inca masons achieved the precision joints visible up close.

Section 2 — The main esplanade (15-20 minutes): The wide ceremonial plaza at the base of the walls — every June 24 this same esplanade hosts the modern re-enactment of the Inti Raymi (Sun Festival) with several hundred performers in traditional Inca costume. The 1536 battle between Manco Inca’s forces and the Spanish conquistadors was fought on this ground — a turning-point engagement in the conquest of Peru. Your guide describes the actual movements of that battle and explains how the eventual Inca defeat opened the path to the religious transformations you’ll see this afternoon at Coricancha and the Cathedral.

Section 3 — The upper esplanade (20-25 minutes): Climb to the upper area where you’ll see:
